Free Podcasting Starter Kit

If you are just getting started, here is a set of free tools you can use to get get moving down the road to becoming a New Media Tycoon in podcasting.

By leveraging this powerful set of free tools, you can be up and running for under $100.

To Record Just You:

  • Buy a headset microphone for audio recordings (Get Plantronics 400 DSP or 750 DSP from Circuit City, Best Buy, Radio Shack or Future Shop)
  • Buy a webcam (Logitech is the best brand) for video recordings
  • Download audio recording/editing software (Audacity for PC/Mac or Garageband for Mac only) or video recording/editing software (Final Cut Pro or iMovie for Mac, Windows Movie Maker (comes bundled with Windows XP/Vista) or Camtasia for Windows)

To Record an Audio Interview or Conversation Using the Telephone

  • Get a free telephone bridge line from thebasementventures.com. After you sign up, you get a 10-digit telephone number, an access code and moderator pin.
  • Both you and your guest dial the phone number at a designated time, enter the access code, then you as the host enter in the moderator id. Click a couple more buttons and you can record the conversation.
  • The recording quality is similar to AM radio.

To Record an Audio or Video Interview Using Skype:

  • Download Skype, then sign-up for a free account.
  • If you purchase SkypeOut, you can call regular phone numbers from Skype and save on long distance.
  • Download Pamela to record calls over Skype.
  • The recording quality is similar to what you hear on a CD.

To Record Video

  • Buy the Flip Camera for mobile interviews
  • If you want to record video at your desk, any webcam will do. The Logitech series are a great choice.

To Edit/Mix:

  • Get Podsafe Music from music.podshow.com
  • Get Podsafe sound effects from soundsnap.com
